Day 6 — When We Still Disagree
Grace in Difficult Conversations

“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”
— Romans 12:18, ESV

“And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth.”
— 2 Timothy 2:24–25, ESV

“I still think Saturday is the better choice.”

Miguel tucked the meeting notes under his arm. Beside him, Andrew sat on the church steps.

“And I still think we’ll miss the families we’re trying to reach.”

They had spent forty minutes discussing when to open the new food pantry. Miguel favored Saturday mornings, when more volunteers were available. Andrew wanted a weekday evening for people who worked weekends.

Both had reasons. Neither felt understood.

Miguel looked toward the parking lot. He could bring up how often Andrew questioned a plan after everyone else seemed ready to move forward.

Instead, he sat beside him and asked, “What worries you most about Saturday?”

Andrew shifted his papers.

“My neighbor works every Saturday. She’s exactly the kind of person we keep saying we want to help.”

Miguel nodded. He hadn’t known about the neighbor.

“I’m worried we won’t have enough volunteers on a weeknight,” he said. “Most of the people I’ve asked already have evening commitments.”

Andrew sighed. “I hadn’t thought about that.”

They sat quietly as another car pulled away.

Neither man changed his mind.

“Well,” Andrew said, “we have until next week to make a recommendation.”

“Let’s ask a few more families and volunteers,” Miguel answered. “See what we’re missing.”

Andrew nodded and stood.

“See you Sunday?”

“I’ll be there.”

Miguel watched him cross the parking lot. He still wanted Andrew to agree with him. But he could picture them sorting groceries together, even if the decision went the other way.

Paul tells believers to pursue peace as far as it depends on them. He also teaches that the Lord’s servant must be kind, patient, and gentle when correcting others. Faithfulness includes both what we believe and how we treat people.

Some disagreements involve practical choices. Others concern biblical truth that we must not compromise. In either case, contempt and insults do not help us honor Christ.

Today, if a disagreement remains unresolved, try stating the other person’s concern fairly before explaining your own. Refuse the urge to question their character simply because they disagree. Where Scripture speaks clearly, stand firmly with gentleness. Where it leaves room for judgment, acknowledge that your preference may not be the only faithful choice.

We cannot force agreement. By Christ’s grace, we can keep pursuing peace without surrendering truth.

Prayer

Lord, help me treat others with patience when we disagree. Keep pride from making me harsh or unwilling to listen. Give me courage to hold firmly to Your truth and humility to reconsider my own opinions. Help me pursue peace in a way that honors You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
