Day 1 — When the Familiar Changes
God in the In-Between
Psalm 46:1–3, 10–11
Sometimes we miss the way things used to be.
We miss familiar faces, comfortable routines, and the feeling of knowing where we fit. Things we once counted on have changed, and we are still learning what life looks like without them.
Even when there are reasons to be hopeful, change can hurt.
We can be thankful for what lies ahead and still feel sadness over what we have lost. Those feelings do not cancel each other out. And grieving what was does not mean we are refusing to trust God with what comes next.
There are seasons when the familiar has ended, but the next chapter is still taking shape.
We are in the in-between.
Psalm 46 speaks into a world far more unsettled than a simple change of plans. It describes the earth changing, mountains slipping into the sea, and waters roaring. The things that seem most solid are pictured giving way.
Yet the psalm begins with this assurance: God is His people’s refuge and strength, a help readily found in trouble.
The comfort is not that nothing will change.
The comfort is that God remains our refuge when it does.
A refuge is a place of shelter. We come to God because we need Him, not because we have already found the strength to handle everything ourselves.
Through Christ, those who trust in Him have been brought near to God by grace. We come as His beloved children, not as outsiders trying to earn His care.
We can bring our Father our sadness, our questions, and the worries we struggle to put into words.
In our previous series, we considered who God is. His character does not become less certain when our circumstances do. He is still wise when we cannot understand. He is still faithful when familiar supports are gone. He is still good when the way forward is difficult to see.
Later in Psalm 46, God says, “Be still, and know that I am God.”
These words are more than an invitation to a quiet moment. In a psalm filled with upheaval and conflict, God commands striving to cease and declares that He will be exalted among the nations and in the earth.
He has not lost His authority because the world is unsettled.
For us, this is a reminder to stop striving as though everything depends on our ability to control it. We are not being asked to ignore reality or pretend nothing is wrong. We are being reminded that God rules over what we cannot control.
That does not mean we have no responsibilities. It means we can face them while depending on Him.
We do not know exactly how the next chapter will unfold. Some things may be rebuilt. Others may take a different shape. Some questions may remain unanswered for a while.
But those who belong to Christ are not facing that uncertainty alone.
The psalm closes by reminding God’s people that the Lord is with them and is their stronghold. His presence gives us reason to trust Him, and His greatness gives us reason to worship.
Even in uncertainty, we can worship the Lord who reigns over what we cannot control. We can praise Him for His faithfulness before we know how this chapter will unfold.
The familiar may have changed.
Our refuge has not.
Reflection
- What familiar part of life do you find yourself missing in this season?
- How does knowing that you can come to God through Christ bring comfort when circumstances are unsettled?
- What truth about God’s character gives you reason to trust and worship Him today?
Prayer
Father, You know what we miss and what still hurts. Thank You that through Christ, we are welcomed as Your children. We do not have to hide our sadness or have every answer before coming to You. Be our refuge and strength in this unfamiliar season. Help us trust Your unchanging character, meet our responsibilities with Your help, and treat one another with gentleness. Teach us to worship You while the future is still unclear. When we cannot see what comes next, remind us that You are with us now. In Jesus’ name, amen.
