Day 3 — When We Cannot See the Way Forward

God in the In-Between

Psalm 119:105; Proverbs 3:5–6

“I just wish I knew what to do next.”

Sometimes the hardest part of change is not what has already happened. It is the uncertainty about what comes afterward.

We have questions we cannot answer yet. Decisions need to be made, but we do not know how they will turn out. What once felt familiar no longer gives us a clear direction.

We would like a map.

Something that shows where we are going, how long it will take, and what we will find when we arrive.

But God’s Word does not give us a detailed schedule for every chapter of our lives.

It gives us something we need more: truth that teaches us to walk faithfully with Him.

The psalmist writes, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Notice where he looks for light.

Not to his own ability to predict the future, but to what God has spoken.

Throughout Psalm 119, the writer treasures God’s commands and asks for understanding to obey them. The light of God’s Word is not a promise that we will receive a private answer to every question. It reveals what is true, teaches us what pleases God, and helps us recognize what would lead us away from Him.

Above all, Scripture points us to Jesus Christ, the true Light, who brings us to the Father. Following Him means learning to trust His words and walk as His disciples.

We may not know what our circumstances will look like next month.

But we know that God calls us to speak truthfully.

To love one another.

To pray, forgive, and act with humility.

To turn from sin and seek what is good.

Those truths do not become less important because the future is unclear.

Sometimes we are so focused on discovering what comes next that we overlook what God has already made clear.

Proverbs 3 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart rather than lean on our own understanding. In all our ways, we are to acknowledge Him, and He will make our paths straight.

That does not mean we should stop thinking carefully, gathering information, or listening to wise counsel. It means our understanding is limited, and it must not become our final authority.

We bring our plans and decisions under God’s truth instead of asking Him to approve whatever we have already decided.

His promise does not mean the road will be easy or that every choice will come with an unmistakable sign. The path He directs may include suffering, waiting, correction, or opportunities that do not open as we hoped.

We can trust Him to direct our lives as we depend on Him, even when that direction includes difficulties we would not have chosen.

For those who belong to Christ, this trust rests in a Father who has welcomed us by grace. We are not trying to earn His care by making every decision perfectly.

We can ask for wisdom, admit what we do not know, and receive correction when we have been wrong.

There may be several reasonable options before us. When Scripture does not command one particular choice, we can weigh those options prayerfully and wisely without treating every decision like a hidden test.

We do not need to invent certainty where God has not given it.

We can make plans humbly, take responsibility for the choices before us, and leave the outcome in His hands.

The way forward may still be partly hidden.

But uncertainty about tomorrow does not prevent faithfulness today.

God has given us His Word. Through Christ, we have access to Him in prayer. His Spirit helps us understand, believe, and obey the truth revealed in Scripture. He does not lead us to set that truth aside, and a strong feeling should never carry more authority than God’s Word.

We may not have the whole map.

But we are not without light.

Reflection

  1. What part of the future do you wish you could see more clearly?
  2. What has God already made clear in Scripture that remains true in your present uncertainty?
  3. How does knowing you are welcomed by grace help you face decisions without needing to make them perfectly?

Prayer

Father, You know the questions we cannot yet answer and the decisions that feel difficult. Thank You for giving us Your Word to light our way and for bringing us near through Jesus Christ. Keep us from trusting our own understanding more than Your truth. Through Your Spirit, help us understand, believe, and obey what You have revealed. Give us wisdom where choices remain open, humility to receive counsel, and willingness to be corrected. When the path includes hardship or waiting, steady our trust in Your care. Help us walk faithfully today while trusting You with tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, amen.
