Day 7 — The God Who Reigns

Psalm 115:3; Daniel 4:35

Most of us like to feel that we are in control.

We make plans, organize schedules, prepare for problems, and try to shape what happens next. Yet one unexpected phone call, delay, diagnosis, or decision made by someone else can remind us how limited our control really is.

But God is never powerless or caught by surprise.

God is sovereign. This means He rules over everything He has made. No person, nation, circumstance, or power can remove Him from His throne or prevent Him from accomplishing His purposes.

The psalmist declared, “But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.”

This does not mean God acts carelessly or unfairly. Everything He does agrees perfectly with His holy, wise, loving, and righteous character. His authority is never separated from His goodness.

God’s sovereignty also does not mean that every human action pleases Him. People make real choices and are responsible for their sin. Yet even human rebellion cannot overthrow God’s plans.

We see this most clearly at the cross.

Jesus was betrayed, falsely accused, and crucified by sinful people who were responsible for what they did. Yet God used those evil actions to accomplish His saving purpose. Christ died for sinners, rose from the grave, and now reigns as Lord.

God did not morally approve of their sin, but He sovereignly ordained that even their evil actions would serve His saving purpose.

That gives us hope when life feels uncertain.

We may not understand why God allows a particular hardship or how He will use it. Trusting His sovereignty does not require us to call evil good or pretend that suffering does not hurt. It means believing that no suffering, injustice, failure, or loss is greater than His authority.

Nothing can force God to abandon His purposes.

Nothing can separate those who belong to Christ from His love.

Nothing can prevent Jesus from completing the work He began in His people. Philippians 1:6 assures us that He who began a good work in us will continue it until it is complete.

Everyone who repents and trusts in Christ is brought under the care of the King who gave His life to save them. We may not know what tomorrow holds, but we know who reigns over tomorrow.

And His rule is always wise, righteous, and good.

• Where are you struggling with uncertainty or a lack of control?
• How does the cross show that God can accomplish His purposes even through human sin?
• What would it look like to trust God’s rule today?

Prayer

Sovereign God, You rule over everything You have made. Nothing surprises You or places Your purposes in danger. Help me trust Your wisdom when I cannot understand what You are doing. Thank You that Jesus died, rose again, and reigns forever. Teach me to rest in Your faithful and righteous rule. Amen.
