Day 8 — Nothing Is Too Difficult

Jeremiah 32:17; Matthew 19:26

We all encounter things we cannot do.

We cannot speak a storm into silence, create something from nothing, or give life to the dead. We cannot change another person’s heart, erase our past, or save ourselves from sin.

Our strength has limits.

God’s power does not.

God is omnipotent, which means He possesses all power and is able to accomplish everything He chooses to do.

Jeremiah prayed, “Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You.”

Jeremiah spoke these words while Jerusalem was surrounded by an enemy army and its future appeared hopeless. Yet God’s power was not limited by what Jeremiah could see. The God who created heaven and earth was fully able to keep every promise He had made.

God’s unlimited power does not mean He will do everything we want. His power always works according to His perfect wisdom, holiness, and will.

It also does not mean God can act against His own character. Scripture says God cannot lie or deny Himself. That is not a weakness. Because God is perfectly holy and true, He will never become evil or unfaithful.

Jesus also spoke about something impossible for us.

After explaining how difficult it is for a wealthy person to enter God’s kingdom, His disciples asked, “Then who can be saved?”

Jesus answered, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Jesus was not promising that God will give us anything we desire. He was teaching that salvation, which is impossible for sinners to earn, is possible only by God’s grace.

We cannot rescue ourselves through good works, religious effort, generosity, or determination. Only God has the power to save sinners.

He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, who lived without sin, died in the place of sinners, and rose victoriously from the grave. By His grace, God calls sinners to repent and trust in Christ. Everyone who repents and believes in Him receives forgiveness and eternal life.

God does not promise to remove every hardship immediately. Sometimes He displays His power by changing our circumstances; other times He displays His power by sustaining us through them.

When a situation looks impossible, we do not have to pretend it is easy.

We remember that our hope rests in the God whose power has no limit.

• How is God’s power different from simply getting everything we want?
• How has God sustained you through something He did not immediately change?

Prayer

Almighty God, nothing is too difficult for You. Forgive me for trusting my own strength or believing that my circumstances are beyond Your power. Help me trust Your wisdom when You do not act as I expect. Thank You for doing what I could never do—saving sinners through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Amen.
