Day 5 — Greater Than We Can Measure

Job 11:7–9; Psalm 145:3

We measure almost everything.

We measure distance in miles, time in hours, weight in pounds, and land in acres. Measurements help us understand the size, length, or limits of something.

But God cannot be measured.

Psalm 145 says, “Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable.”

There is no boundary to God’s greatness. He is infinite.

This does not mean that God is simply an enormous part of the universe. He is not part of creation at all. He is the Creator who made and rules over everything that exists.

God is infinite in His being and in all His perfections. His wisdom cannot be exhausted. His power does not run out. His presence is not restricted to one place because He is present everywhere while remaining distinct from creation. His holiness, goodness, love, justice, and mercy cannot be measured as ours can.

Job 11 asks, “Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?”

The answer is no.

We can know God truly because He has revealed Himself through creation, Scripture, and most clearly through Jesus Christ. But we will never know everything there is to know about Him. God is infinite, while we are finite.

That truth should humble us.

We sometimes act as though we must understand everything God is doing before we can trust Him. We want every question answered, every delay explained, and every difficult part of our story made clear.

But if we could completely understand God, He would not be God.

His ways are higher than ours. His knowledge reaches beyond what we can see. Even when His purposes are hidden from us, His character is not. He has shown Himself to be holy, wise, faithful, merciful, and good.

The infinite God has also drawn near to us in Christ. The Son of God took on human flesh without ceasing to be God. Jesus died for sinners, rose again, and offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who repent and trust in Him.

We cannot measure the greatness of God.

But we can worship Him, trust what He has revealed, and rest in the truth that no need, burden, or uncertainty in our lives is beyond His wisdom and care.

Prayer

Infinite God, Your greatness is beyond anything I can measure or fully understand. Humble me when I think my understanding is enough, and help me trust what You have revealed about Yourself. Thank You for drawing near through Jesus Christ. Teach me to worship You with wonder and rest in Your wisdom and care. Amen.
