Day 6 — The God Who Never Changes

Malachi 3:6; James 1:17

Change is part of nearly everything we know.

Seasons change. Plans change. Bodies age. Relationships enter new stages. Even our thoughts, feelings, and desires can shift from one day to the next.

But God does not change.

The word theologians use for this is immutable. God is always perfectly and completely who He is.

He does not grow wiser because He already knows everything. He does not become stronger because His power is already complete. He does not improve in goodness, holiness, or love because He has always possessed every perfection fully.

God declared through Malachi, “I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, the sons of Jacob, have not come to an end.”

God’s unchanging nature was the reason His people were not destroyed. Although they had been unfaithful, God remained faithful to His covenant promises.

James describes God as “the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” Shadows move as the earth turns and the light changes, but there is no shifting shadow in God.

This does not mean God is distant, inactive, or unmoved by His people. He hears prayer, shows compassion, responds to repentance, disciplines His children, and acts within history.

Scripture sometimes describes God as relenting when people repent or when someone intercedes. This does not mean His character changed or that He learned something new. God does not change, but our relationship to Him may change when we repent or rebel. His responses are always consistent with His unchanging holiness, mercy, wisdom, and purposes.

Because God does not change, His promises remain dependable.

He will not become less loving tomorrow. He will never treat sin as harmless, and He will never turn away any sinner who comes to Him through repentance and faith in Christ. He will not abandon those who belong to Him or forget the salvation He promised.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His death for sinners and resurrection from the grave are finished realities. Everyone who repents and trusts in Him can rest in a salvation that does not depend on changing feelings, circumstances, or human effort.

Our lives may change in ways we welcome and in ways we never expected.

But through every season, we are held by the God who never changes.

Prayer

Unchanging God, everything around me can shift so quickly, but You remain the same. Thank You for Your steady holiness, love, mercy, and faithfulness. Help me trust Your character when my circumstances and feelings change. Thank You that salvation in Jesus rests on Your grace and not on my ability to hold everything together. Amen.
